Leonardo da Vinci fascinates me, and I enjoyed the BBC Open University program about him very much. He was full of ideas that I think must have overwhelmed him at times as he could never settle to one project for long. Apparently he was gay and had a brush with the law in his late teens. As an artist he liked to experiment with various techniques, and was way ahead of his time, but this led to the deterioration of a lot of his work in later years. Da Vinci was part of the Renaissance movement, in particular the High Renaissance along with Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian according to The Art Book: Mini Edition. The Italian movement is most well known, but other countries contributed, such as Germany, though their Renaissance developed separately from Italy's. The Renaissance was a time when artists were moving away from religious icons and becoming more aware of the human element. Figures became more life like, and work was done from the human point of view rather than the Church's. The famous and mysterious Mona Lisa hangs in the Musee du Louvre, Paris, and is dated 1503/6, Leonardo wasn't one for rushing things.

The thing most people think of when they hear the nameVincent Van Gogh is that he hacked his ear off, I usually think of the popular song, 'Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)' written by Don McLean. I love it, and have a CD of Josh Groban singing it. When it comes to his work, I love the vibrant bold colours, Vincent may not have had much confidence in himself, but with a brush in his hand he worked wonders. Van Gogh is classed as an Expressionist in The Art Book: Mini Edition, which means he was an artist who aimed to express his feelings on the canvas rather than worry about the exact look of a subject. It was a passionate, bold and personal style of painting and Vincent inspired others to try it. Vincent's brother Theo was very supportive of him and his work, but could do little to allay the artists torment. One of his most well known works of art is The Sunflowers [oil on canvas], dated 1888, which is on display in the National Gallery, London. On the 29 July 1890, Dutch born Van Gogh killed himself in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. He was born in Groot-Zundert.
